car won’t shift into fourth and over drive is gone

Ok so just recently I had a mechanic remove my differential because the old one was messing up he installed everything but didn’t mark the drive shaft and differential he just put the drive shaft in and now it won’t shift into fourth and uses 3rd as overdrive

What year is your car, and is it an auto? Which auto specifically? Was the driveshaft also removed from the transmission or just from the differential?

What does the mechanic have to say about this? Because I wonder if this is electronic related, as I'm not sure how removing the driveshaft from the diff (and possibly the transmission) would make it not shift into OD.

I wouldn't worry about the flanges not being marked. The driveshaft is balanced separately, apart from the pinion flange. Besides, an imbalance would result in driveline vibrations, not shifting trouble.

If this is an automatic, check the shifter linkage and the MLPS switch mounting.

the OD off button isn't pushed in on the shift lever is it?

Axellopez 08-15-2018 07:03 AM

Yes it’s a auto and no it wasn’t disconnected from the transmission just from the differential

Axellopez 08-15-2018 07:04 AM

No when I turn off over drive it does nothing

O/D indicator light flashing or anything like that?

Ok so I was told that since the speedometer isn’t working correctly it might be that and that’s why it can’t shift into fourth correctly could it be the speed sensor ?

Yes the speedometer needs to be working correctly for the car to shift properly. Even with my manual trans when they installed the wrong year t45 in the car and the speedo didnt work the engine would surge and sputter once in awhile when coming to a stop or inbetween shifts.
