Default 2001 spare key

When I bought my 2001 GT I was given one key and one fob with the car. I am wanting to get another key so I will have a spare. Has anyone had a extra key made from a locksmith or from the dealer? Would like to get a idea on the cost? I know the key has to be programmed to the car. Would I be better going to the dealer or a locksmith? Thanks

As far as FOBs, you can buy them on eBay. I got two for $7.00, and they're easy to program.

Keys, need done through PATS. If you had two, you can program a 3rd, but since you only have
one, you will need to go to the dealer to have it programmed into the car's PATS system.

You can try this:
1. Put the current key into the ignition.
2. Turn the ignition ON and back to OFF.
3. Remove the current key and insert the new key,
turning it ON. You MUST do this within 15 seconds.
--Wait-
4. The security light will switch on for two seconds, confirming that the key has been successfully
programmed into the vehicle.

This was the same process I saw with the S197, except you had to do step 1 and 2 with both
keys, as 3 and 4 for the second key, then step 5. Remove the current key and insert the new key,
(3rd) turning it ON. You MUST do this within 15 seconds. --Wait-- Then step 6 for confirmation.

Dealership told me when I bought mine they were the only ones that could program them and it would cost me $65 but that was back in 2001.

Mobile locksmith service can do it. I had 2 new ones done years ago after my kid got my only key and put it somewhere where it took 6 months to find. Paid around $200-250 at the time for 2 new keys and programming.

Dealer wanted $40 for the key and $80 to program. Plus you gotta figure out how to get the car there.

Did you or the person look to see if any fuses were out? PATS has a fuse under the hood,
not sure which one...

Check the wiring to the transceiver, make sure the ground is good. If the ring
on the ignition cylinder is not powering the chip in the key (inductive), then it
won't read the key.

Later, for Bypassing:
If you want to bypass PATS, you can attach one of your PATS keys inside your steering column
by the lock cylinder. This will make the car always 'see' a key with a chip. You can then use a
regular steel key. This is also done when installing remote starts on cars with PATS so you don't
need to buy a module.

Called the dealer today and that is pretty much what they told me. $35.for the key and $80 to program. Really that is cheaper than what I was thinking.
