Default Does my GT have twin cams?

I saw them doing a cam swap on HP TV last Sunday on an older mustang. I'm not sure what engine it was, but I thought I heard them say 4.6L. I know in 2005 they changed things up so i'm not sure.

You probably saw a 4V 4.6L. We have single over head cams, one cam per cylinder head.

But the cam on the left head should be a twin of the cam on the right head......so you could still say we have twin cams

4V DOHC....no.

S197=3V SOHC 4.6 V-8 Single Cam
Were the heads on the car ususally large? If so maybe it was a cobra 4V heads.

Yes we have 2 cams in our 3V 4.6 motors. Each head has a cam for the valves. It’s called a SOHC because it is a single cam in EACH head.

The older motors of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s had true single cams that controlled ALL the valves by using pushrods. Our cars, and about all newer cars, if not all, no longer have rods and thus each head in any vehicle has a least 1 cam. Some have 2 cams per head and thus DOHC…

SOHC = Single over HEAD cam, 1 cam for all valves in that head intake and exhaust.
DOHC = Duel over HEAD cam, 2 cams, one for exhaust, and one for intake valves.

SOHC = 2 heads equals 2 cams.
DOHC = 2 heads equals 4 cams.

GM and Chrysler still use OHV configurations in their LS, Vortec and HEMI motors

Also remember they are not Twin cams. There is a right side camshaft and a left side camshaft, they are different. One cam is longer than the other to allow clearance for the drive chains.
