Default Manual Transmission Fluid...

I was wondering the correct way to check and make sure that my manual tranny has the right amount of lubricant in it. The only reason I ask is because I would like to be able to check all of my fluids from time to time the correct way. And I am also wondering because I switched the OEM lube for royal purple recently, and if I remember correctly the book that came with the car said that the fluid level should be about 1/2" from the bottom of the fill hole(not sure if that is right though).Anyways, when I was putting the royal purple in, it started overflowing out of the fill hole. SoI let it all drain out even with the fill hole, and then I drainedjust a lilttle more (not too much because the front was already jacked up, and that made the fluid not set level) andIandbasically just tried to use my finger to guess where it was. To me it seemed like there should be a much better way to accomplish this. Please keep in mind that I dont have access to a lift, so it would have to be done with good ol' jacks and stands. Thanks!
