So does anyone think the "wear guard" I was told the shop installed with my gears is BS to scare me into not going WOT or could a "wear guard" actually exist?

I have never heard of any such wear guard, it's a new one on me.

Total and complete

I would call them on it. I'm interested to hear their explanation .

Oh oh! even better... insist they pull apart the differential to take the 'wear guard' off after the requisite miles []. Be sure to ask for the part back.

I will ask about the shop to show me this wear guard when I call the shop to whine about my noisygears.

I can handle the noise, I just don't want any damage to be taking place.

I just don't get it...when you purchase a brand new car should you wait a certain amount of miles before going WOT? I mean those aretechnically "new" gears too.

After my gear install.
I picked the car up and went right to the track.
It runs fine.

If they are whining, then they were poorly installed. Period. There is no such thing as a wear gaurd. You need to get them to reinstall the gears and tell them to doublecheck the backlash this time.

I have heard 3 heat cycles. I drove mine 5 miles down the road, turned around and stomped it,I couldn't resist. No whine or problems at all after a few thousand miles. You may want to play it safe, but if you cant resist I dont think you will hurt them. All of the test drives that new cars get are driven hard. I know I dog the crap out of them when I drive them. Those gears do not have 500 miles on them.
