Default Almost Sold On Saleen SC After This.

I was just looking thru the Feb 08 issue of Mustangs and Fast Fords. They have a write up on the MOD Mustang shootout. What stands out to me was JDM's car, 9.88 @139.01, 9.883 @136.54 and a 10.044 @136.41 spinning the tires. If my calculations are correct that car should be pushing between 750hp and 792hp on only 14lbs of boost! Whats more amazing is its on a 298 stroker motor and 100% stock automatic transmission! The other cars are running anywhere from 18.5lbs of boost to 25lbs of boost with turbos and Prochargers. The only car with better times was the Procharged car running 25lbs and a 150 shot of nitrous. How is he getting that much hp out of 14 lbs of boost or could that be a misprint? If its true at 14lbs, its turned me into a big believer of the Saleen SC. I dont think I have seen many others putting those numbers on that amount of boost.

It's not 100% stock tranny. It is basically the same with upgraded bands/clultches. So it's the same tranny withstronger insides.

Keep in mind it's a fully built motor.

Very very impressive if you ask me.

race gas and very aggressive tune? theres lots of ways to run those times, but those ways may not always be streetable. i'm sure the stroker motor has something to do with it too.

I agree. Even with a stroker motor, that number seems high for a Saleen s/c. I have not heard of anyone pushing more than about 480 rwhp on a stock motor from a Saleen. if you throw on another 150 for the stroker,it does not add up

That shootout in Feb 08 MM&FF (if it's the one I'm thinking of) was a cool article, but I was bummed that no one had a manual tranny. (Yeah, I know the auto can have advantages at the strip and no, I don't mean to start a manual vs. auto argument.) But it still bummed me out!

Some additional food for thought(reposted from Brenspeed's website):

Car: 2006 Mustang GT
Owner: Brenspeed
Location: Indiana

Performance:
This car is bone stock with the addition of our Saleen package and exhaust upgrades. It has the factory automatic, now has 4.10 gears, and the factory engine. The only additional non factory part on the car is the Pypes mufflers. This car is raced leaving the shifter in drive. We change the combo of parts often as this is one of our test cars

Read Below For ET History:
12.47@111.7 Stage 1 Brenpseed Package on BFG drag radials and stock gears
11.90@115.4 Stage 3 Brenspeed Package on BFG drag radials and stock gears
11.52@118.73 Stage 4 Brenspeed Package on ET Street Drag Slicks and stock gears (80 degree ideal weather)
11.37@125.13 and backed it up with a 11.37@121.5 same as 11.52 set up listed below but now running 4.10 gears (60 degree ideal weather & 93 octane fuel) 1.65 60 foot

11.19@127.2 and backed it up with a 11.19@123.5 same as 11.37 set up listed below but now running 2.8 pulley, Mac LT's, Mac X-pipe, no front sway bar. (60 degree ideal weather & 93 octane fuel) 1.62 60 foot. Note this power level is exceeding the mechanical limits of the engine.

Crank It Up: 650 HP on the stock engine resulted in engine failure (Which is what we expected). After running 11.19@127 which was already exceeding the engine mechanical limits we added an EXTRA 47 rwhp and 50 ft. lbs. of torque to put the car into the 10's. This was accomplished with more boost, fuel, and a larger induction. That was a little overboard as the crank and rods did not appreciate the extra power as much as we did. We installed another stock engine and re-installed our stage 3 package. New ET for that package is listed below. We have another test car with a built engine that will continue the high HP Saleen testing. This vehicle will continue to test the more mild packages (for now).

Back to the stage 3 kit: 11.50@120.9 and backed it up with a 11.54@120.2 running our stage 3 Saleen kit, 4.10 gears, aluminum driveshaft, stock manifolds and cats, and ET street slicks.

Saleen makes a good sc. Don't expect anywhere near those numbers jdm is putting down. You could get some decent power with the brenspeed tune package for the saleen. Build your bottom end up and a high boost kb or even a whipple should put down a little more power than the Saleen. Magazines are also known to put good writeups for big advertisers. A lot of people swear by JDM's tunes though.
