Default Gears? Good daily driver idea?

Hey, my GT is my DD... however, I definitely plan on uppin the power on my beast.. i only have a CAI as of now, but I plan on getting a tune soon ( still trying to decide where and what programmer ) i was thinking Bamachips since a lot of people like the tunes from there, but I like brenspeed as well... anyways... i see a lot of people talking about changing out their gears ( keep in mind im a mod newbie ) and I was wondering what big advantages you get from upgrading to like 3.73's and how much it would cost/how hard is it to install them...

Gears are an expert only install - must be done by someone who has done lots of Ford 8.8 rear ends.

Cost for parts and labor will be in the $500-600 range.

Advantages - engine will rev faster, you get into the meat of the powerband much quicker. It doesn't add HP but it feels like it. Car will perform better in 1/4 if thats your thing.

Disadvantages - you'll run slightly higher RPMs which can lower your MPG if you do lots of highway driving. Minor amount and not a big deal in my book. Also - the install is tricky and can cause gear whine if not done properly. More a problem with 4.10s than 3.73s.

Do you know which gears you have now? The reason I ask is 3.55s were an option on 2007. If you have 3.55s now and move up to 3.73 you may not feel much diff. Is your car an auto or 5-spd? The rule of thumb is 3.73s for Auto, 4.10s for stick.

There are alot of people running 4.10's on a daily driver both manual and automatic. 3.73s will be fine for a DD.

TBH I'm not sure what I have in mine right now but it's an 07 stick and yeah I don't do any track time but may consider it in the future, but I'm just mainly about the daily driving and feeling good gettin on it on the on-ramps haha but yeah I just wanna figure out whats the best route money wise to get a big change in performance. I'm not saying I want cheap, I just don't want to spend $700 bucks on something thats only going to benefit me if I want an impressive timeslip... MPG is important, but if I have to sacrafice 1 or 2 mpg to get an awesome feel in the car it would be worth it to me.

IM RUNNIN 3.90S RIGHT NOW AND THEY WERE GREAT WHEN I WAS MAKIN ABOUT 330RWHP THEY GET GREAT MPG AND GET YOU THROUGH THE GEARS ALOT FASTER. IT COST ME ABOUT $450 FOR THE PARTS AND INSTALL. AND IT LOWERED MY 1/4 BY ABOUT .4 OF A SEC. BUT NOW I MAKE TO MUCH PWR FOR THEM AND GO THROUGH THE GEARS TO FAST SO IM GOING TO DROP DOWN TO A 3.73 OR A 3.55 I BELIEVE

Where did you go to get it done? Just a trusted speed shop? Anyone in the Bay Area? Only good shop I know is an exhaust shop haha... I need to find a quality shop to get some stuff done... but yea I think I might go with 3.90s, 4.10s seem a bit much for a DD but I still don't know.. and any opinions on best brand of gears to get? Heard motive had problems...

i went to modular powerhouse to get mine done and i rec. pro 5.0 or richmond for gears, there great and wont wine loke motives, pro 5.0 is the only company that makes th 3.90s for our cars i believe. but for anyone under 400rwhp i say there the best gear for sure!

3.73's are a great all around gear, they offer quicker take-off's and 5th gear is much better on the Highway with them as opposed to 3.31 or 3.55's. A lot of guys will say going from 3.55 to 3.73 wont be much of a change, my thoughts on the subject is, it's not what you started with that's important....it's where you are NOW. 3.73's FTW

everyone is right. if you go from 3.55 to 3.73 your not goin to notice crap of a change if your just bolt-ons, you only gain a few hundred rpms, and it not really helpful although if you changed from 3.31 it would be more noticable

I have a stick, I had 3.73s, but decided to eventually go with 4.10s. I am glad I made that decision, I just wish I went with 4.10s in the first place.

I can still use first gear with the 4.10s, my mpg is 21-22 depending on how I drive, and I drive on German Autobahns with the 4.10s.
