New Gears

New Gears
I've been thikin about some gears. My car has 3:55's in there. I dont think a 373 would make that big of a deal. So i'd kinda like to step up to 390's but i hear ppl have some trouble with those whinning. So i'm kinda scared about getting them. And I really dont wanna step up to 410's.
So my question is, are 390's worth it. Or should I just suck it up and get the 410's

I still keep seeing all the complaining about Motive.
Friend of mine who owns a drivetrain shop has said repeatedly that Ford no longer makes their own gears like they used to...that FRPP gears are just re-boxed Motive's.
I have Motive 4.10's in mine and have no issues.

I have heard you will need to jump at least a couple sizes to have any real noticeable gains. I am now debating over the same issue, after my cam install I defiantly need a gear swap. Thanks to Ford down grading from 3.55's to standard 3.31's for manuals. I may go to 3.73's or 4.10's. Let us know what you decide and what you think of your gear decision. I need some in put before I do my gear swap.

I did Motive 4.10's. They started making noise at about 100 miles.. not excessive, but its there. On the other hand, I DID drive it hard a few times before the 500 mile mark. I don't know if my getting on the throttle before fully breaking them in per manufacture spec caused the problem, or if the gears are just junk, but either way there is noise when I decelerate. The good news is I pretty much don't hear it with the top down, and I don't drive unless I can put the top down (got caught in the rain once, and I really noticed it).
I trust the installer way before I trust the gears, especially since there are so many complaints about the Motive gears.
If you have a 5 speed, I would definately recommend 4.10's though.. I am happy with the performance. I always hear that 3.73 is the way to go with automatics though, but going from 3.55 to 3.73 is not much of a change..

The ratio really has not as much to do with the whine, it's more with the install. There are several companies that make gears for our car. I had FRPP 4.10s that whined like crap, bad install though. When I upgraded, I put in a locker and changed to 3.55's (turbos are different).
IMO, 3.90s are a great option. With my 4.10s and a 265/40/18 tire, I was coming through the lights at redline at 117 mph. I knew I would upgrade later and I was loosing some power with the 4.10s. With a properly sized tire and 4.10s you could get to around 120+ in your trap, 3.90s would give you a little more. The 4.10s were too much on the street in 1st and 2ndn with the turbo and 3.90s probably would have been too. But it depends on your future goals. If you are going FI, make sure you keep a wheel size that can get you the trap you desire if you go FI.
The gears I got for my car are made by Yukon. They have been around for a long time and make great gears.
I guess the entire point of this thread is to consider your future goals before making your descision. If I were still N/A using a bottle, I would be running 4.10s. If I had an S/C I would probably have a 3.73 or 3.90. With the turbo, I like the 3.55s.
