Yeah all those magical noises appear after doing anything... especially head gaskets in a 6.0L diesel

If this was not done, all bets are off as to what the noises actually are coming from.

Not sure whats included in an 'install kit' but if each kit came
with all the available shims (see link above to workshop manual)
and then you only use one or two per side, there would be an
awful amount of them left over and after a few rear end jobs,
you could possably have quite an unused selection on your hands.
I wonder if he reused the crush sleeve on the pinion or used a
new one and properly set up the preload.
I can't see anyone trying to reuse a crush sleeve. the ford gears come with a new sleeve and some shims, but not all shims needed. My shop didn't charge me anything for extra shims. Any shop that does a lot of gears will have all the shims necessary.

My gears were perfect....for a while.....now they whine like crazy. Super disappoints me.... I am taking mine back to see what they'll do.

I think you said you heard whining, well if you do take it back. Doesn't matter what gears you get you shouldn't be hearing whining.
