differential seal replacement
I have a 2001 GT. 4.6 liter. 5 speed manual trans.
I recently changed a leaking pinion seal.
When I was putting the nut back on the preload torque was reached way before the 180 ft.lbs. needed to tighten the nut. Therefore , by the time I got the nut to 180 ft. lbs. the preload was to high and now the is noise coming from the differential. What can I do to fix the problem?

If the preload is too high then it means that the crush sleeve is crushed too far now.
Really the only way to fix it is to pull the pinion gear out and replace the crush sleeve.
There isn't a 180ft lb. torque specification on the pinion nut. You tighten till you get the proper preload, no more.
Here's a video of the process.
