Question CAI...85mm or 95mm

I have an 08 GT manual tranny with 3.73 gears and am looking into a CAI and tuner. With a completely stock car is there any advantage to a 95mm CAI (C&L Racer) versus a 85mm (FRPP Bullit)? I am really starting to lean towards the FRPP Bullit CAI with the SCT3 tuner. Just looking for the most HP for the $$$. From what I have read on the sites, it appears that the 95mm only helps with heavily modded engines, cams and heads etc. Any insights?

If you're not going to do anymore mods you might as well get the FRPP power pack wit the CAI and Procal tuner and call it a day. If you're going to mod later on then 95mm is worth the $$ unless you plan on a supercharger.

In mods do you include exhaust? Not likely to throw a SC on just yet, just trying to get the most with the begining bolt-on's available. I've read that without removing the cats, that's the first restriction regardless of the intake or headers. True? I'd love to build a beast, just not yet, now just trying to get the best efficiency and thru flow, without falling for hype. I'd love to pick-up an extra 30 rwhp by going to the C&L racer(95mm) and SCT3 93 octane tune, but was just wondering if that kind of gain is possible with the FRPP Bullit (85mm) and SCT3 93 octane tune. Does the intake bore size make that much of a difference in possible gains in a otherwise stock GT? Where would you begin to need the 95mm intake, as far as further mods?

You are correct. The 95mm will provide no additional benefit unless you're internally modified. Personally, I'd go with either the C&L Street, Steeda or JLT. All of those plus the ones you mentioned will provide equivalent performance gains. But since the CAI provides the smaller percentage of the performance gain compared to the tune, you should be concentrating on the later. The tune provides about 80% of the gain for the combo.

Can you elaborate as to which tuners are felt to be more aggressive versus ones that are more on the conservative side? Any pros or cons, limits to future mods?

Here is my steeda 90mm vs C&L 95mm dyno comparison...

If I had known this before, I would have gotten the 95mm C&L and just built into it....

I think you will get what you are looking for with the C&L Street. The tune will surely make the difference.

Take the difference between the Steeda and the C&L in the dyno above with a grain of salt. You could easily get those differences doing 2 consecutive pulls on the same CAI. Bottom line, any of the CAI's will perform. Just be sure to get a good tune since it's 80% or more of the power add.

Interesting dyno readings. The low rpm's really changed. Was it corrected for variables? Cat temp turned off or such? For some reason I am drawn to the factory look in a CAI. Just a personal preference. Glad to hear the intake is only a small % of the gains. Now.... just to drop the bucks and dive into the mod addiction. I knew it was coming.............
