Gear Grind After 3.73 Install and Break In
So the 3.73's I had installed last weekend are beginning to worry me. I drove the car from LA to Monterey Bay after the install, a nice easy cruise, was very careful not to use any more-than-necessary throttle for 5 heat cycles, and the gears are making a grinding sound. It's not a whine at cruise, it's an actual grinding noise whenever I apply any more than roughly 30-40% throttle. The shop that installed them is extremely reputable, which was the reason I drove 6 hours to have them do all the work on the car, so I'm really hoping I didn't jack up my new gears somehow. Any input / ideas? I read a post in a recent thread that LCA's make increase NVH, but this is very audible and the LCA's I have are the mildest of Steeda's offerings. Any info you may have would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like the pinion bearing wasn't preloaded correctly and the pinion bearing is actually loose. This isn't your fault as gears need no procedure for a break in. Take it back and make them fix it and don't let them tell you its your fault for not following a break in period. One other thing it could be is a bad pinion bearing and that would also come from an incorrect preload torque. That would sound more like grinding rocks.

Thanks guys for the input. I'll give them a call and figure out what we're gonna do about it, is there a possibility of me damaging the gears in the mean time? This royally sucks as the shop is over 6 hours away, but I gotta do what I gotta do I guess. F'n A.
