What amazes me is how each car (S197 of same year) is so different. Brent said most run fine with the 93 tune as written and some don't (and those even ping with stock calibration). So, basically, some 3V 4.6's can't produce as much power because reatarding timing is giving something up.

Wasvette, did you get your headers ceramic coated? Now that I have JBA ceramic coated shorties, I think it reduced my underhood temps and I havent had any engine pinging yet this year, but I got it in May of last year and had to run the 91 tune with 93 gas.

Wasavette, My car pinged with Brenspeed's 93 tune. I ended up running the 91 tune with 93 octane and added 2 degrees timing myself. Mine only pinged in the summer.

The whipple tune has never pinged and I beat on it in the heat of the day! Wish I had my aeroforce gauge back when I was running brent's tune, could have saw how much timing was in it.

you can view how much timing is in your tune by just using the sct II as a datalogger.

They're not ceramic coated but it pinged the exact same for quite a while with the factory exhaust manifolds. The headers haven't been on that long.

Also, just ran a full can of seafoam with chevron 93 and it pinged getting on the highway today

Thanks Moosestang - Brent is either going to dial out some timing on the 93 tune or just do a 91 and I'll run 93 octane with it - I don't know if it would be a good idea to FI a 146,000 mile engine

i had the same thing. i was running a brenspeed 91 tune w/91 fuel. the pinging started when it got hot, so i loaded the 89 octane tune, but stayed with the 91 fuel, and it cleared right up.

when the pinging started i also noticed when going WOT through the gears, the rpm's would pause for about half a second at 5000rpm and then jump back up. this is also gone with the tune swap.

One Bad Stang - Thanks; it sounds like if I go with the 91 tune with 93 fuel I'll be good.

Also, you have to give the Seafoam a chance to do its thing. It will not eliminate pinging immediately after it's poured into the tank. It took 200 miles to work on my car with only 17K miles on the clock. With over 100 K miles on yours, you may need to go thru another can or 2 in order for it to do a good cleaning job.
