Oil leak from 'cap' on passenger side rear axle
Hi All
I have done several searches to try and diagnose my fault, but the answer i found was for a V6, where mine is a V8.
I noticed a few droplets of oil on the garage floor this morning.
I determined that they came from a cap on the passenger side rear axle.
I know this needs to get fixed, but my questions are:
1) What is this cap, a filling cap?
2) If its leaking could it be due to the cap failed or does it just need nipping up?
3) I have an extended warrenty on the car, however i have to pay the first $100, so if its something simple i dont want to be stung the $100 when my local guy could do it for $50????
The car is a 07 GT with 21K on the clock. I have only owned it for 2 weeks so have no idea of the history.
Thanks in advance.
Graeme

It is the fill plug.
If it bothers you, tighten it a little it is pipe thread that is designed to compress the threads as it gets tighter.
If it still leaks, remove it, clean it with brake cleaner and ad some teflon tape to it and tighten.

That is the vent fitting, the cap on the fitting will never seal,
if it doesn't let air out when axle heats up you will blow out
pinion and shaft seals. Some people have added a tube to
extend it higher up, but a small amount of oil on axle tube
there isn't really a problem, usually shows up after hard driving.

What i have noticed is there is a small metal cap over what i guess is a nipple of some sorts. (i cant remove the cap as i cant get purchase on it, with being on my back under a non lifted car).
It does worry me the amount of oil on the shaft (with there being enough that it dripped on the floor) concerns me that the drive shaft could eventually run dry. (maybe i am over-worrying)
I am 100% sure that the oil came from that nipple/vent/cap.
I wouldnt say i was hard driving, althought i was driving harder than cruising at 75pmh in 5th gear, but i wouldnt say i was running more than 4K revs and 65mph.... although i did open it up on the interstate but only for 4 miles....
....feel like i am going on a bit now..
I will monitor it on my run to work tomorrow (40 miles, 95% interstate at 75mph) and see where i am after that.
Thanks for the feedback so far.
Love this forum :-)

There is a TSB for this issue.
TSB 10-3-7 REAR DRIVE AXLE VENT—OIL LEAK:
Some 2005-2010 Mustang vehicles may exhibit a heavy fluid leak from the rear axle vent after hard acceleration.
The TSB replaces the vent with a small bulb that the oil over flows into. The part number of the bulb fitting is AR3Z-4A058-B. Mention this TSB to your service adviser.

TSB's
Thanks for the feedback...
Can someone advise how i approach a TSB, in that is this a safety recall which Ford resolve at no cost to me?
As a reminder the car is out of its 3 year Ford Warrenty, its an 07 GT.
Do i head to my nearest Ford dealer and explain the situation and mention the TSB (referred to previously) and see what they say? Or is a TSB just a bulletin and you are on your own, therefore i buy the part from Ford and either fit myself (with limited tools and space) or have my local 'man' do it?
Still learning about this stuff so appreciate your patience.
Thanks Graeme

$$
That was a bit of shock.... $46 for the little bottle modification part.... my jaw literally dropped when the parts guy told me how much.... anyway as expected the part is on order as they dont have it in stock... oh well, still cheaper than the aftermarket warrenty (which i have now cancelled anyway).
will keep you posted.
Thanks Graeme

You can make that part yourself for little or nothing. I was going to do this for my o7. But in the end i did not need to do this. All it was it had to much oil in it. Had a after market cover on it with the fill bolt above the factory fill plug.
