Default Help with 07 GT and an Xcal2

I asked this in the tuner sticky, but it's a bit more specific than a general tuner issue.

I recently bought my 07 GT used. It may have a tune on it, but I can't be 100% sure. It appears the engine is stock, right down to the Motorcraft air filter. But the auto trans shift points seem different than other GT's I've driven, and it shifts quick at WOT.

I have an SCT Xcal2 from my 97 Cobra that I no longer have (before I sold it, I returned it to stock). So here are my questions:

If I got the SCT reprogrammed for my GT, would I have any issues if the GT already has a tune flashed?

Is there a way to detect a tune already on the ECU?

Do shops still tune the Xcal2, I've noticed its since been discontinued by SCT?

I believe that even though the Xcal2 that you have isn't linked to the PCM in your '07, you may be able to get the strategy code off the PCM with it. That will help determine if you have a tune other than the stock OE tune.

I suggest you contact AM or Brenspeed before you do anything and ask them. It may very well be that your old Xcal2 won't work on the '07; who knows.

Keep us posted.

I'll plug it in and see what happens. It would also be nice to know if there is a tune, especially if it is for higher octane. I'll make some calls and see what I can find out. Thanks.

I'm still using a XCal2. You do need to know if your GT is stock (as mentioned, you should be able to plug in and see if it's stock or not).
But regardless, a tuner should be able to make you a tune. The xcal2 will only hold up to 2 2007+ tune files instead of 3. You'll likely need to upgrade the bios in the xcal2.
And, you might end up saving your current tune as your 'stock tune', which sounds like a good base as it is

The Xcal2 couldn't read the strategy on the car, said "Could not read strat." Maybe the software is outdated. At any rate, I'm all about the path of least resistance, so I'm gonna be investing in a CAI/Tuner combo in a week or two.

I suggest you mention to tech support with whomever you order from (Brenspeed or AM) your experience with the Xcal2. It may have some meaning to them and could prevent some issues.

I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but here goes. Let's say the car has a tune on it now. Would it be better to have it flashed back to stock before messing around with other tuners?

If so, is the dealership my only option?

The only mod that I've found so far, outside the pypes catted h-pipe and axel back exhaust, is a set of underdrive pulleys. It would be nice to know if it had a tune (at the very least to ensure what octane I should be running), but I haven't found anything yet that would require one.

Also, how do I upgrade the bios of the Xcal2? I bought it new in about 2005, so maybe the software isn't up to date enough to read anything on the 07. I don't know, opinions???

Call the tech support folk at AM or Brenspeed. They can answer your questions better than we can.

Eventually I will do that and see what they have to offer.

However, I spent some time on SCT website, downloaded some stuff and updated the Xcal2. It was actually pretty simple. In doing so, I was able to read the current strategy on the car. It came back as FOAF054. So what does that mean? I googled it but didn't really find an explanation of what that means.

Also, the device info came back as "stock" (since I returned the 97 Cobra back to stock before I traded it in). If I understand SCT website correctly, I can erase the tunes for the cobra with the Live Load software and return the Xcal to "unused" and use it on the GT. I'll keep messing with it and let you guys know what I find out.
