Starting Trouble

I'll start by saying that I've owned my mustang off the lot since 05 and this is my first problem which makes me very happy with Ford. Not the same can be said for my chevy trailblazer....

I decided to head to the store to get some medicine since I'm sick and went start my car (manual) and it turned over as usual then when i released the key it died. The car hovered around 200 RPM as it tried to start before stalling out. Tried two more times to the same effect.

Decided not to kill the battery and got out of the car and noticed a little black smoke coming from the exhaust.

im not sure if i released the key too early the first time and somehow flooded the engine or if this is something else. was unable to find any threads with a search so im hoping for some help here.

i have a code reader (bought because of my chevy) which i can plug in and get live data but dident notice any codes. ideas appreciated!

Can you get it to run at all or does it does just kick over at 200 RPM and then die?

Miles since your last fuel filter change? Have you tried cleaning the TB? If you had any symptoms previously such as rough or fluctuating idle, it could either or both of those. More info will get you better responses.

Replaced fuel filter last year with oil change dont remember how many miles that was. At least i paid for the filter and replacement. Have never cleaned throttle body.

im using mobil 1 full sythetic and have never had a problem with it. ive seen the threads saying royal purple will kill your car.

If i remember right this happened a few weeks ago where it started up, chugged at around 200-250 rpm then popped right up after about 2-3 seconds. I figured because it was cold something just got stuck. Its around 60 degrees outside right now. Car ran fine since that incident.

some additional info, hooked up my code reader and got some live data. engine start seemed to bring rpm up to around 500 then it fell to around 230 where it struggled then stalled.

throttlebody cmd read 9% while off then droped to 0% as it went from off to to finally stalling.

maybe i shouldent mess with my car while im sick :) Looks like throt cmd is for the gas pedal not throttle body. Is there anything i can look at on a live data device to determine if my throttle body is getting stuck?

Turn key on, don't start, wait for dash to quiet down,
push gas pedal to floor, you should hear TB motor run
moving blades. If you have 2nd person available you
can take off inlet airtube and they can see if blades move.

good idea. ill try that tomorrow. everything seems to be pointing towards throttle body. between the smoke coming out of exhaust and just the way the motor sounds it just seems like its not getting air.

I took apart the air intake assembly and looked at the throttle body, seemed clean enough but figured it give it the test anyways. with key on hit gas and the throttle body did move so that seems to be working. i checked the air filter and its like new even checked for gerbils in the air line and none found. maybe its a fuel problem after all. as much as id like to work on it myself ill probably just have to take it to a dealer since i live in an apartment and they dont let people work on cars on their property.

thank you all for the help. It was the throttle position sensor!!!!

Good, the '05 and early '06 have a TPS that is problematic.
They went to new design in '06 so your replacement should
be new one.
