Default Overtemp light and temp guage not working

So I've got the overtemp light on and temp guage not working (2010 Mustang GT). Any idea what part it is? This came on after sitting overnight w/crank up temp in the 40's, so no overheating. Also had the engine light come on at the same time and it does not crank up like it used too (like it's flooding). Just trying to see if this is something I want to try and fix or go sit at the dealer for a complete day after working all night to have them look at it and hopefully fix.

No engine mods. Suspension mods as well as axle-back exhaust (w/20,000 miles w/o issue). Have O'Reilly auto parts here (really small town) and don't know if they can/or do check codes (I don't have a code reader).

Had a friend w/a code reader. Results: P1290 cylinder head temp sensor. Have to buy this from Ford or does the parts houses have these? Better yet, where is this located? Is it something that has to be changed by the dealer (because of the pain in the *** factor mainly), or something that someone mechanically inclined can change? Thanks for any help.

True - decided to just let Ford fix it. Just have to find the time to get it there. Thanks for the replies

Make sure you find out what they did. Ask for the old part back. Might learn something.

On a warranty item they will not give him the part. THey turn it in to Ford to get credit for doing the work. They will probably let him see it though...

It's going to be awhile before I can even get it in for service due to my schedule and backlog at the dealer. I know it's not a good idea but, the aux fan runs continuous. Think I can just unplug it. There's a short in the wiring or sensor cause I hit a big bump yesterday and my temp guage worked for a couple of minutes, then died again.
