is 15w 50 weight oil too heavy?

The 1st number is how well the oil will flow in colder environments, you only need a 0weight oil if you live where it stays under Zero for extended periods (ie Canada).
5w-30 or 10w-30 will work fine as long as you don't see really low temps. The reason Ford uses the 5w-20 is for the minor fuel mileage gains it supposedly gives.
Funny story, years ago I was stationed in Florida where I ran 20-50 oil in my old Trans Am. I moved to Illinois in October and it turned COLD with 20' temps and went out to crank my car and the freakin engine was locked up. I had to change the oil to get it to crank.
