Wow. If I'd have known that I'd have bought stock in Mobil.
My current tow vehicle see's (and 2 previous tow vehicles saw) boat towing duty every weekend and I use M1 in it changed at 10k mile frequencies. Those 2 previous tow vehicles were sold with 215k miles and 152k miles and ran like tops. Unless you're running track or motor-X, 3k miles on full syn is a...sin. But, it's your money to waste. I don't even change the Motorcraft blend before 5k miles minimum.

Does it stay between the lines?
Oil color is not an indicator of whether an oil's protective packages have been depleted. Quite often, an oil can be black but still test fine for an additional 10k-15k miles or more. I, too, thought dark oil meant "bad" oil. But after oil analysis technique training required by a previous job, I learned better.
Oil companies make more money if they convince you that you need to change the oil more frequently. And "We the Sheeple" tend to follow them blindly.

Touche.
I've read all the stuff here and other places that say it's fine, but generally, I'm not even considering changing until 6-7k anyway. Yes it stays between the lines lol. Typically I use the darker oil to determine if I do it at 6 or 7k... Makes me feel good even though with today's modern oils it's not a real issue anymore

Oil change every 3,000 miles / 3months
Brake & Clutch Bleeding every 10,000 miles
Transmission and Rear Axle every 10,000 miles
Power Steering every 20,000 miles
Coolant every 40,000 miles
Spark Plugs every 30,000 miles /
I know its pretty soon on all of them, but I just love taking care of my car and keeping it clean. I'm only 18 so I do all of this on my own so it saves me money.
