Default Catalytic converter questions

Is it possible to remove your catalytic converters, hollow them out, then reinstall the shell? I'm pretty sure that in my area emissions is just a visual inspection (no tailpipe hook up smog test).

Is there a performance advantage to doing this?

Would doing this throw codes?
If so, could codes be cleared and performance be optimized with a tuner?

That's a lot of work. Just get an offroad h pipe or x pipe and save yourself the trouble. Yes you will need a tuner to shut off the o2 sensors because it will throw codes...or if you can find a set of the MIL eliminators (they are not sold anymore) you can plug those up to the wiring harness to get rid of the engine light.
You are looking at minimal power gains...its more for the sound.

Hollowed out cats sound like garbage too.

Buy an intake and tuner, you cheap bastard! I can't see gutting the cats with the stock tune doing you any good.

Also you know how much those factory cats are worth just in scrap value? If I recall correctly I think I sold mine for almost $100.

My thoughts exactly. Use the dough to help offset the cost of an off-road pipe. Personally, I would remove the cats but save them. Also, be 1,000% certain that you will never need them again. "Pretty sure" is not much confidence that you will not need them ever agin for emissions testing.
