How about one of those things that you push a button on the end and a small claw sort of opens up on the other end. I've seen then small enough that they should go in through the spark plug hole.

I would pull the head off - better safe than sorry.
The heads can be removed with the engine in the car on the S197. It is easier to time the engine on a stand, but not impossible in the car.
