Best all around rear end gears for over 450rwhp
I have a 08 saleen 5spd with over 450rwhp. I had 4.10 gears put in when it was stock. Now I have a 3.4 pulley, and longtube headers with 275/40/20 nitto 555r tires. I was thinking of switching to 3.55 gears. Ive got 117 mph with this setup so far. I think 3.55 gears would be easier to launch and better to drive on the street. I was also thinking of getting 15x8 or 15x10 with 275/60/15 drag radials

3.55 would be what would have been considered the standard gear set with 3.73 optional with a setup like that IMO. What is your end goal? Are you drag racing and running out of gear and need a lower ratio?

I take it to the track like twice a year. But it's kind of a headache to drive it on the street. On the Thruway if I have to drop it down a gear it revs to high and actually feels like it would be faster with 3.55s. Because it feels like it's in to high of a gear. I just didn't want to change gears and regret it.

Instead of swapping a set of 3.55s into your existing rear axle, you'd be better off searching the junkyards for a good used rear axle from an '05-'06 manual GT that'll already have that gear set as standard.

^^^I Agree^^^Best to look for a used one. 6 or 7 years ago I found a place on line selling 'new' factory 'whole rear axle assembly's' for the best I can remember $1,400 dollars. I was going to buy one but 3.55 gears were the lowest ratio they sold, I wanted 3.73 gears. I had my local Ford dealer do my gears and paid a lot of $$$. I can't find any place that sell the whole rear ends (8.8) any more :( |
I think I only paid 300 for a shop to swap the 4.10s
