'91 LX only shifts into drive while it's in the air
Hello!
Sorry if this has been asked before, I tried doing a little searching but nothing came up.
A few days ago I purchased a 91 Mustang LX 4-cylinder with the A4LD transmission. The guy I got it from said it had a bad transmission, but he also said he hadn't tried to actually diagnose it. The car shifts fine into reverse, but won't shift into drive unless its up on jackstands and even then I have to give it a little gas before the wheels start moving. I replaced the filter and still the same, the fluid was a little dark and smelled a little funky but nothing that I thought was too far gone. Looking around on the Ranger/Explorer forms they say a vacuum leak might cause it but the line looks okay (other than being a little loose, but it still took force to get it off).
Now obviously I bought the car with the intention of replacing the transmission, but if I can avoid that it would be great. Does anyone know of other diagnostics I can try? I'm a relative noob when it comes to automatic transmissions so any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
