Default Finally Bought the 2.3T

well i put $200 down on a 2.3T with just under 170 000 kms on it today (about 105 000 miles). the guy started it for me today and it smoked a little...it's the same one i've been looking at for a little while now. he claims it's the head gasget but we'll see when i rip it apart...in total it's $500 canadian for the engine, turbo, tmic, intake assembly (with VAM and wiring) and downpipe. he said he'd sell me the EEC for $85 extra but that seems a little steep to me. how much is reasonable for a good LA2/LA3? well here are some pics...i'll take more when it's in my garage. i go to pick it up whenever i have access to a truck/shop crane/engine stand (possibly within the week)

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...1/DSC02290.jpg>>> u can see the smoke a little in this one
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...1/DSC02289.jpg>>> this is the odometer reading...kinda looks to me like it's american...hmmm...maybe 170 000 miles?

Good deal! Congratulations! Did you get the VAM and connector? The smoke sounds to me like a cracked manifold or valve cover leak dripping onto the manifold. If I were you, I'd get a cheap engine stand, put the motor on itand remove everything, including the head. Pop the rod and main caps and check the bearings. Next, give ita good seal-n-shine. Replace all hoses, sensors, etc. Have the injectors flowed. Motorcraft only tuneup. $150 will get you a new Motorcraft PIP and TFI (2 problem areas on high mileage 2.3's). Have the head checked for cracks and get it freshened up. Better yet, give Boport a call and have him massage it real good!

If you need an ECU, I have an LA2 out of my old '87 5-speed TC I'll sell for $50 + shipping. I think shipping is around $15 to Ottowa via USPS. Computer is in excellent condition! LMK.

Sounds like a really good deal to me. I ended up buying my setup in parts. The best buy I've had yet was the short block, which costed me 100 bucks for the shortblock, pan, valve cover, ps/alt. brackets, and a beat up distr.(bad TFI, it was busted up during removal, but i can use the main part, just not the cap/TFI), and the pullies off of it.

The next best, would have to be my large vam/35# injectors for 80 shipped as a pair to my door.

When you buy in a bigger set you get cheaper, and 85$ canadian for an la2/la3 is a good buy, 85 us, is about average, I gave 85 for my la2.

Good deal, and as evintho said, you will want to redo the gaskets/seals atleast. I just bought mine, and I am going to clean it today, then cover it, until I get new gasket seals to put in. Sorry for posting a big spam, but just leaving a small comparison for you.

Floyd.

just bought the motor

i asked for the full intake assembly and pointed out that i needed the VAM and the connector with about 8 inches of wire

i'm planning on doing a rebuild/seal 'n shine. plans are to tear it apart andreplace all gaskets/hoses/bearings/sensors, and new rings. (hope the head's not cracked! they havea spare head at the junkyard that i might be able to pick up if it is). after that i'm gonna paint the block + re-assemble it.
next question: well i think i may have found a truck i can use to pick up the motor. he's gonna lift the engine into the truck using a bobcat then i'm gonna drive it home. hopefully by then i have an engine stand. the only piece to the puzzle left is a hoist/shop crane. do you think it's possible to have 3 or 4 healthy 20 year olds lift the engine onto the stand or is it too heavy? the engine's probly roughly 400 lbs right? that's what i read somewhere...
