Why is my exhaust manifold glowing red

I only drove the car for about 5 minutes, I did get on it a little but not over 5k. I smelt burning andI thought the breather popped off the valve cover. I pulled over and my exhaust manifold was fglowing red WTF. Anyone have an idea, it is a 2.3 turbo.

umm... its running really lean??

A lot of people have glowing manifolds. It could be timing, lean, rich. If you can, pull codes or search on TF about the issue (I'm sure you don't have one though)

Does it still have a have the exhaust convertor in it. Drop exhaust off turbo. And see if does better. Pipe maybe stopped up. Old trick potatoe in exhaust pipe.

It still ran as good as always, I'mstumped. I noticed valve cover gasket was leaking, could oil on the manifold make it glowing red? I don't think so

RE: Why is my exhaust manifold glowing red

The oil would make it smoke but the glowing I'm sure is fine

Driving it aggressivly will make it glow red. Mine has glown red more times than i can count. Had my downpipe glowing too.

Its a neat glow from under the car.

If thats all it is i am happy as ****. It is the first time I've seen it, would a s.s header stop that?

s.s header?

stainless steel

RE: Why is my exhaust manifold glowing red

Nope, all headers will glow I'm guessing. It deals with alot of heat

sounds like a plugged cat to me.......(Sorry if thats already been said...I only read the top post)

RE: Why is my exhaust manifold glowing red

The glow is because there is a tremendous amount of heat and pressure inside of that exhaust manifold. Youre ramming 2.3L worth of exhaust pressure through a hole thats about 2.25" in diameter. When the turbo spools up to 15psi, youre effectivly doubling the displacement of the engine, so then youre forcing 4.6L worth of air through that 2.25" hole.

Thats why turbo cars have much higher exhaust temps.

RE: Why is my exhaust manifold glowing red

Would that have anything to do with why Turbo cars use 3" Exhaust?

Stang2.3 10-24-2007 03:54 PM

RE: Why is my exhaust manifold glowing red

Oh Ya, They need to flow Exhaust out quicker to avoid Turbo Over Heating Problems. My Eclipse had a 3" to the Muffler than 4" Exhaust Tip.... BIG MOFO!:D

RE: Why is my exhaust manifold glowing red

My header gets really hot after little 10-15min drives.... but never red hot lol. I'll have to snap a shot of it with my phone.... but I have painted the header...

RE: Why is my exhaust manifold glowing red

I would not go any smaller than a 2.5" exhaust for a turbo car, I would go all the way to 4-5" If it would fit under the car[&:]

RE: Why is my exhaust manifold glowing red

yeah well our 7.3 powerstroke has a 6" tip, lets see the ricers beat that![8D] also has 6" piping

stang8689 10-24-2007 08:05 PM

RE: Why is my exhaust manifold glowing red

I have had that engine for almost 5 years and never seen it like that. Do you thing my cheap ass 3" high flow cat is clogged? I have 3" down pipe as well. My car is only set at 8 psi cause i lost the damn spring and ball in the boost valve
