you don't. you send it to some jackass company in california and they cut you a check. actually a lot of cat theft has been going on with imports and such in cali because the scrap prices for their converters are so high. i think import cats can go for a hundred or two. the average american cat is like 20-50.

slight word of caution, I'm sure that burning fiberglass has to be some sort of cancer causer simply because of just putting fiberglass in my attic requires masks...not that I'm a doctor or anything, but I do play one on tv...J/K

not to sound like a hippy-tree hugger even though trees have feelings too (I love how they scream when I fire up the chain saw),but a proper high flow cat is environmentally safe, keeps you legal at the sniffers, all the states are going to have emission laws eventually. I also saw for myself on the dyno that a non-clogged"monolith" style cat cost the engine one horsepower and increased the torque by 2 ft lbs, and that was above a straight pipe exhaust system! The dyno doesn't lie.

I was just thinking...the cats on your car are probably the original, and any cats over 5 years are going to have clogging and failure due to use...I would replace the restrictive crap the factory installed 10+ years ago with a new set up. We never dyno'd it, but I know when I replaced the original H-pipe on my old '87 mustang notch 302 with a new X-pipe with cats I felt a huge improvement in power, throttle response and my fuel economy improved by 3 mpg. and really that motor was stock except for a set of 351 heads from arizona speed and marine w/full aluminum roller rockers.
