Default 85 GT wont start, help!

Hello all, new to the forums and ive been reading and it looks like there is a lot of expertise here, so i feel confident that my question will get answered
I've just replaced a bad mechanical fuel pump on my 85 GT, and true the car hasn't been started in about 8 months, but i get it to start only by holding the ignition all the way to 'start' and holding it there, released it to normal 'run' mode results in the engine dying and i get an awful clicking coming from behind the glove box on the pass. side. Im thinking solenoid or maybe a ignition relay or something.. but I thought id check here before i go out and start buying all sorts of parts down at checkers..
Thanks for the help!

Good thinking.. but its right next to the battery.. on the pass side.. but still the sound is almost coming from inside the firewall, not in the engine compartment

Check voltage at the coil (+) pin Ign on...another possibility is a bad ignition switch.

Ill check that right away.. so a bad ignition switch would cause the noise from what.. a bad relay?

Not really a bad relay, if the ignition switch is kaput in the "On" position, it might not be sending the juice to the components/circuits it should, once you move it to the "Start" position, it then sends the juice where it's supposed to, or another way to see it would be...."On" position = "Off" for some components.
