Default Trannsmission?

I have a 1983 5.0 Convertable with the T-5 transmission. I blew the transmission out a while ago and have been looking for replacement trans for a while. Everywhere I look though, it will say "T5 will work on 85 and up mustangs" or "86 and up mustangs". Does this mean that I cannot use a transmission from any other year on my car? If not, what years would I be able to use? Would it just be cheaper to rebuild my current transmission? Any help is appreciated, thank you.

i think they had a different manufacturer for the t5 later on. if u use a later bellhousign and clutch assembly u should be able to run the later version

I'm not 100% sure about this, so research it if you can. Ford switched to the WC T-5 which uses a 10.5" clutch/press. plate instead of the 10". I'm not sure if the flywheel is the same, but the later 5.0's use a 157-tooth FW. Also, the # of splines on the input shaft may be different. Find a WC T5 and bell, and then get a Ram HD or King cobra clutch kit for ~$170.

No i did the same on my 83 but i had the 4 speed. All you have to do is change the bellhousing and everything else will still work, I know that you have a 10 inch clutch and a smaller flywheel. I recomend changing it to a 10.5 inch while you have it out. I have a stock 10.5inch clutch with 75% life left that i will give to you for pennies. The blot setup on the flywheel is not the same so you should change that.
