Default Buying an ’86

I'm looking to buy a 1986 5.0liter / 5spd from a *gulp* friend. I previously owned an '88 5.0 liter auto, I sold it mainly because of the automatic transmission.

What should I look for being wrong on this car?

It has a 5.0liter HO engine, T5 5spd transmission, stock ?limited slip? differential, and is in generally good condition. There are rust spots appearing along the bottom of the door sills and on the trunk, but none on the rocker panels. Did the 86's come with some sort of limited slip differential? How much does a Posi upgrade generally cost?

Cost for the car, BTW, is $2500CDN (so $20 USD )<img border="0" src= smileys/smiley15.gif>

Thanks in advance,

David

that, and having flat top pistons with no valve reliefs don't allow you to change to aftermarket heads.

Its true that motor is a bitch. I have the same one. But you can put heads on it. Just stick with a smaller valve,1.90 or so. You really cant use a cam either. If you really want to go all out, you can always have the pistons fly cut like i did.

If you put 1.94" valves on that motor, you WILL slap the piston at high RPM if you get any valve float at all. I wouldn't do it. There isn't enough clearance without fly cutting the pistons.

Thankyou for your replies, concerning the differential: does anyone really know whether it's LSD or not?

With a stock cam, and 1.5, or 1.6 rockers you should be ok.We've done it before. With performer heads, stock cam, and 4.30 gears ran a 12.48.

what kind of clearance did the motor have between the piston and valves?
