Motor swap upgrades?
 

I'm looking ahead to the day when I throw a new motor in my car. I'm leaning toward a remanufactured stock motor, as I like the warranty and reliability associated therewith. My question is: Is there another stock Ford motor that would be an upgrade from my 88 GT motor. Could I put a remanufactured Cobra motor, or a 351, without any big hassle. Would any other motors work? I'm not looking for huge gains...just something significantly more powerful. Thanks.

If you go w/ a rebuilt motor just get a short block and then something like the TFS top end kit. A cobra motor won't give you much more power, but that top end kit on a rebuilt motor would give you pretty good power.

Thanks for the reply, Funk. How much do you think something like that might cost? And by the way, I'm still coming around to thinking of pistons as being "bottom-end" components. I'm used to bikes, where they are part of the top end. So freshening a car motor is serious business. Very curious what shops charge for that kind of work.

you can get a long block ( complete except for intake manifold and such )
for between $3,500 and $5,000 depending on how serious you want to get.

I would stay away from a 351 swap. It involves alot of work, and accessories hardly ever line up like they are supposed to. You would be better off building a 347 and do a direct swap into your chassis. Just my 2 cents.

you could put the ford racing 514ci for $8K--- significant gains!
