Default AOD or 5spd?

hello everyone.... well i was planning on converting my AOD w/ B&M shift kit trans to a 5spd. but i heard that AOD's are slighly faster then the 5spds depending on how you drive it, is this true? Second question.... i really havent done anything with my engine yet, so you people out there that are more experienced than I, (being a sophmore in high) would like to ask you guys where should i start with my car, i was thinkin i can start at the core and change the engine to a 351, ive seen it be done before.. or should i bore it out? or should i just slap a super on it and redo the whole exhaust and intake, i'm just lookin for some different opinions here thanks

the aod is alot heavier than the t-5 and has more rotating mass so in stock form the t-5 is gonna make for a faster car as long as someone who can drive is behind the wheel. i had an aod in my car when i got it i have since swapped it for a t-5 and it made my car not only faster but so much more enjoyable to drive. if your just farting around town you can't beat a manual. the stock aod sucks. automatics are more consistant not faster unless they are built (usually you see the c-4 which is a 3 speed which makes it good for drag racing) and have a really high stall torque convertor.

If my legs weren't so damn long I would NOT have an AOD.

That said, an AOD with a good shift kit and modified valvebody built by someone who REALLY knows what they're doing with FORD automatic transmissions (any hack can build a Chevy TH350 to survive 500+hp in their backyard if they've got a good core, Ford's AOD automatics are a bit more complicated and delicate) is a blast to drive, especially in lousy traffic (prevents knee and elbow aches!) I had mine built by the best transmission guy in my area, went from completely blown up to kicking me in the pants with every shift for $1675... look to spend AT LEAST the same amount to have an AOD re-worked for a moderate amount of power (5.0 with a cam, intake, and exhaust) if you plan to race it at all, and be ready to spend even more if you're building the engine up (Lentech will be your friend there, they have all the parts to completely fix all the design flaws in the stock AOD design, ask Twister (the cocky dude with the '86 hatch), he's got the only street-driven AOD I've ever driven that drives better than mine, he spent the extra money on some of Lentech's parts, I didn't, and mine still drives pretty dang good!)

a built aod can surprise alot of people. but they are still slower than a 5-speed but astock t-5 can take but so much. if you do a swap dont waste the time and money on a t-5. go with a tremec tko600. or build a good aod.

Everybody has a personal opinion and I think thats what this is. You can build a 5spd and you can build an AOD. I've heard nothing but GREAT things about Lentech trannies. Also, depending on your application you could even go with a PA Street/Strip C4. The only thing with C4's is that they do not have an OD which means that your beat if you like your gas mileage.

I dont think I will ever drive a 5spd for a DD. I dont think I could stand shifting a car all the time. YES, its fun sometimes (racing, etc.) but when your sitting in traffic for 45 minutes at 8:00 in the morning EVERY MORNING I think I would get tired of it real quick.

I agree. Wait till you get older and start to get pain in your knees (ouch!). Driving a stick then gets old real quick. When I came back from 'Nam I had a 65 GTO with a 421 tripower, 4:11 gears and ladder bars, with non power drum brakes and no power steering! I use to drive it from Ft. Dix to my home on Long Island every weekend. And, yes my left leg did get bigger! Talk about gas mileage! I use to get about 8 - 10 miles per gallon. I know, everyone says "well, the gas was only 29 cents a gallon. Yes, it was, but I was an E-4 making 225 dollars a month. So, I guess everything is relative. Oh well, I digress (lol). If not for my knees, I would love to keep my notchback a 5 speed. Thanks for letting me go down memory road (again). And thanks for the guys who answered my qestion about swapping to a AOD. Later...
Charlie
