Shims
depends on wut shims are wrong. the carrier shims or the pinion shim. either way its a pain because of the constantly checking and measuring. the carrier shims are used to check the backlash. the more you take from the more you add to the other side. if they are ford racing gears you could prolly get away with using thestock pinion shim.also i made the mistake of not tightening the pinion nut tight enough and it wined after about 5 miles when it losened up alil bit. it says 140-220 ft/lbs. i made it 140 and it wasnt enough. the best way is tighten it untill you can barely move the piece where the drive shaft connects 2 with your hand enough so it will turn. to check the back lash and see if your shims are wrong u need a gague. the back lash should be around (.08-.15) also the worst part i think is the oil its a pain in the a$$. its not to hard if you did it a few times.

If its making noise its too late. The gears are worn in and you need to replace them

It's not for sure that the gears are worn is it?Cause they still work damn good.
