i have the red headed stepchild of the group. i have the great 4cyl but i am going to drop a 302 carb in it this summer when it gets a little warmer out. so do you know what gears came with them? also how much work would i be looking at to install an 8.8? the reason why i wanted to do the 8.8 is 1 it is free and 2 it has 3.73 gears in it right now

ok well what is the 8.8 you have out of? and you are looking at unbolting the drive shaft, unbolting the control arms, the sway bar, removing the brake lines, removing the emergancy brake calbes. thats all i can think of for now, but its a lil bit of a job but not to bad. most of the time to stock gears were 2.73

well the rear came from my little bro who smashed up his stang and he installed 3.73 gears in his witch i now get for free [sm=happybounce.gif] as well has his whole front brake setup as well as anything eles i want. when i talked to a friend of mine he was telling i would have hell trying to install that 8.8 becuse it was wider then my stock one and the struts and springs would not line up. i don't know how true that is so i though i would come here and find out.

I just did up my 8.8 in my restoration car. I have 3 GT Mustangs, 2 have posi, one didn't, it was an option to get a Posi rear-end in the GT mustangs from 87-93 at least. 8.8's only came in 5.0 mustangs. If you're just running a 4cyl engine with the 7.5 you're more than fine. 8.8 would only slow down a 4cyl car due to the extra weight and rotating mass. If you're running a 5.0, then, the 7.5 will do for awhile, but as they learned from 79-86, the 7.5 don't last too long with the output of the 5.0's.

It took me about an hour to get the rear-end out of the car, and even less to put it in, was dead easy. Also, I would suggest getting the handling package installed on the rear-end if you're putting it in a 5.0 car, stops the rear-end from hopping, just 2 extra shocks is all it is, they were only $55 CAD a piece, mine were shot on all my cars. Stock 8.8's came with 2.73's, the so called "magic gears" for a 5.0 are 3.55's for a street car. While you're at it I would suggest converting to a 5-bolt car, all you need is new axels and drums, which put me down $70 CAD for everything.

All you have to do is driveshaft, Brake lines, e-brake cables, 6 shocks (4 if it doesn't have the handling package), 4 control arms and the sway bar. So about 18 bolts and it's out.

All in all, you could do the whole thing in an afternoon easy. About 2 hours all around is all it should take.

if you have a good 8.8 go ahead and put it in when you get the motor in. and i just wanted to add, be careful when you take the rear springs out man. theyll fly outta there if youre not careful.
