you should not of taken it off. there is no need to when doing a manifold. its not like its in the way or anything.

if you are getting fuel then inj are hooked up....you can still have spark with timing 180 off....did it ever pop in the intake?

i say its timing. if it was 180 out it should backfire, if its doing that watch it because it can blow a muffler up.

Make sure that #1 cyl is on the compression stroke. Take out the #1 spark plug and put your finger in the hole as the engine is turned over manually (It will take you all night to get it to TDC on the balancer using the starter).When the compression pushes your finger out of the spark plug hole you know you have the compression stroke. Line up the timing mark to TDC on that stroke. Drop the distributor in making sure that the rotor is pointing to the #1 tower on the cap. DO NOT point the rotor at the tower before you start lowering the distributor or as the distributor drop down in the helical gears it will advance. Make sure that it is pointing at the tower when the distributor is seated. If your firing order is correct on the cap you should be good to go once you replace the spark plug.

Sorry, that should be "do not point the rotor at the #1 tower before you lower the distributor.it should point at the #1 tower when the distributor is seated." You may have to move the oil pump driveshaft with a long screwdriver to make this happen. Maybe not.

I'm referring to the #1 spark plug wire connection on the distributor cap. You need to have the rotor facing the electrode for the #1 cylinder on the cap.
