i agree tim! TheJushinator, dont just jump into anything. youd be surprised what you can find! it just takes time. i would say dont buy that car, even if it is the lifter. there was probably low oil pressure to ruin a lifter. it is just a sign that the engine has been abused. keep looking!

My friend was just over at his house, and he said it sounded like a pecking noise. So it must be the rod knocking..... Will motors from other ford cars with 5.0's work with mustangs (like a grand marquis) ?

If it's just a slight ticking noise it'll be the lifters. If you have a compression tester I would check the cylinders before I bought the car, I always do that, my Mustang was putting out 160psi all round so it was good. As long as every cylinder is close to the other the engine is good.

For lifters it's a 9 hour job to get the heads off (that's for an experienced mechanic, what it says in the labour book, though no mechanic can do it that fast.. that's just what it says) So it's about a 17 or 18 hour job probably for you, so you have to be able to set away the time to do it.

And yes, all 5.0 short blocks are the same (except cam), just take everything from your block up and you got yourself a new H.O. (heads, intake, distributor and don't forget the camshaft [different firing order])

I concur, why do you have to take the heads off to get to the lifters?
You could try and put some trans fliud in the engine oil and see if that quiets the lifter.
I also think that if a lifter failed there was no oil or oil pressure and there could well be lotsa stuff wrong with the engine.....

the lifters are insude youe motor guy. you have to pull the heads and intake and everything on top of that. its gonna be some work dude. personally, if i had never done this before, id let someone who knows how do it. and man, i wouldnt ever buy a car thats pecking. it could have major probs. really major....like a rebuild. how much does he want for it?

in some cases a poor lifter will clear up at a higher rpm..case in point my freind had a deal like yours..he took my old lifters which were good.after he tore it down he found one of the piston skirts was broke off.just becareful

Oops sorry, I don't know what I was thinking.. kinda tired and well.. just yah. You don't have to take off the heads, my bad. All there is to take off is the plenum & intake + all the wiring and hosing that goes with that, valve covers, rockers and that little bracket that keeps the lifters from spinning
