Cam advice

I have a 1994 mustang gt and i am getting my motor rebuilt in a few weeks and i wanted to cam it i was wondering if i need a specific cam or if any cam would work i plan on keeping the efi set up do i need a computer compatable cam? and what should the deration and lift be on the cam i choose to best suit the motor?? Should i buy the cam and give it to the shop the same time i take it in or let them handle it?

What other mods do you have? A cam needs to be matched to rest of the combo, you don't just put any old cam in there.

how do you go about matching cams? I've just been looking at cams that I like the specs on...

You need a cam that matchs the gear, trans, weight ,heads, engine size and intended use. For example the cam in my SS is .231 degrees duration on the intake side and .237 on the exhaust (at .50, alway compare cams at .50 and not advertised duration) the lift is .598. A cam this size would not be good for a 5.0 with stock pistons and E7 heads. This is because the cam will shift the power way up in the rpm range, and the stock heads would not allow the engine to rev high enough (and it would not clear the stock pistons). If you are interested in learning more about cams there are some really good books at Borders and lots of info on the net. It's pretty techy stuff but after you get the basics down it's pretty easy to understand.

i pretty much understand that. so basically all ur saying is, find a cam that is said to work with what you have or plan to have... ie gears, heads etc.

It only has an intake and flows the motor is completely stock i hope to have some kind of head work done when the engine is rebuilt. I'm not trying to build a really fast car just a faster motor than before i plan to buy bolt ons after the build like an off road x pipe and ingnition u/d pulleys just basic bolt on stuff.

Id say wait till you get heads, I cammed (e-cam) mine and I got very little gain. But the idle does sound really really mean, even for stock exaust.
