Default 90 LX 5.0 Auto tranny Shift problems *New purchase*

Hi folks. Found this great forum researching a 90 LX 5.0 we're thinking of buying. Took it for a test drive today, and tranny wouldn't shift higher than 2nd gear. Do these cars have a limp mode they go into?

In OD, seemed to just stay in 1st gear. Dropped it down to D and got 1-2. Started in 1 then shift up to D got a real soft shift into 2nd gear stayed there and I eased it up to about 70mph and I backed off.

Something I could check out when/if I go back? Dealer was totally clueless when I told him it wouldn't shift. Scratched his head and said maybe low on fluid.

Saw him physically checking the fluid when we pulled out, but when I called him back later today, he said he never got a chance to check it. hmmmmmmm

I pulled the tranny stick when they were closed yesterday, and fluid color was good and smelled fine. Could be that it's a toast tranny and they just put new fluid in it, but got to thinking it might be something else.

Hoping someone here can give us some advise. It's a really clean Mustang without a ding on it save a scuff on the rear bumper. Sweet inside and out and the motor just purrs. I can get the car for well under $2000 and possibly closer to $1000 if it's tranny is shot.

Any clues? If it sounds like tranny, what is a ballpark figure to go to him with for a rebuild on one of these? Need some bargaining room!

Thanks.

ha deff dont pay $2000

offer them $1000 and drop ur offer to $800

show them cash, they wont refuse

the ford AOD tranny is a piece. trust me i know i have one. my OD band is shot so if i need to cruise on the highway i have to baby it into OD otherwise SEVERE hesitation and massive power loss. i also cant keep it in OD in the city cause it just throws the car out of gear every second but on the highway it's good.

sounds like that cars been abused sometime in it's life. did you check the rearend/posi?

trannies are cheap to rebuild. you can pickup a rebuild kit for about 3 bills on ebay.

My OD went in my 92. Seems like all the AOD have problems. It cost me $900 to rebuild my tranny.
Tell him you got an estimate to rebuild tranny for $1200.

OD band also went out in my vert. You might tell him to get the TV cable set, that sounds like your problem almost, unless the entire tranny is taking a shat.
