Does the $140 include parts though? And is'nt the bearing and seal on the shaft and the race in the housing?
No, Bearings in the tube behind the seal.

Or was that the early models only? Before 88'?

If I were you buy the parts online and take them to the shop to have them put in. Please Please don't pay them outragious prices for parts.

Ceeck out these prices from 50resto.com I'm sure you can shop around and get better prices but I was in a horry.

3.55 gears $159.95
Master bearing kit $84.95
axle bearing and seals $23

The labor for the gear install is a good price and like someone else already said the wheel bearing install is a 2 minute job if that. If they say it takes longer the are F'n IDIOTS and you shouldn't take your car there.

all axle bearings are at the end of the shaft.

I rebuilt my rear end and when I did, I replaced EVERYTHING including axles, it cost about a grand and I did the labor

Even the carrier?

Did you get an aftermarket locker or something?

The max I got quoted was 500+ and the lowest so far has been 300, but I bring the parts.
So I'm getting shafted, huh? God, I wish I could find a place like that around here. I've checked with four places, including a hole in the wall. Every place is giving me a similar figure (within $40), except for the hole in the wall which quoted $400 not including anything new except the gears. Maybe I'm just unlucky. At any rate, I knew the price for the gears was like $60 high, but also knew that the labor cost was lower than other places. Either way, I'll pay extra for convenience and speed. LOL. None of these other places could get me in before next week, and some would need the car overnight. At any rate, thanks for the replies everyone. Philadelphia, here I come!
