RE: How much HP can a 302 handle?
Go with a 351.I love my 5.0's those motors are the **** but if you are looking for some serious low buck power the 351 is the better choice. Its about the same cost to mod a 302 and the 351 makes more with the same money and effort.
I am personally as soon as im finished with school in a few years doing a 460/C6 swap in my 89 i cant wait.Thats what you should do as well.I read in a mag i have from back in the day where they ran a stock 460/C6 in a 90 notch and it ran 10.96 i dont know how much truth there was in that but id like to find out.

it depends a lot on how you plan to use it rather than the maximum number. the motor will probably handle more than your transmission/rear end/ U joints can take if you aren't careful![sm=smiley2.gif]
are you building it for the street, strip, or street/strip? the street is more forgiving because you can spin the tires a lot easier on the street compared to the traction on a dragstrip. for the street, torque is the most important variable as this is what gets the car going stoplight to stoplight. horsepower is more for the top end speed and racing flat out compared to street driving. the block is only one part of the power equation, you need to consider forged steel versus cast crankshaft, rods, pistons, etc. 4 bolt mains are much stronger than 2 bolts with a lower end girdle. any power adder like a sc or turbo needs a stout bottom end to survive. 351's can make more power but they will require more overall modifications to your car in the long run and add extra weight too![sm=smiley6.gif]
properly built, you can make as much power as you can use with a 302 instead of a 351 if the street is where you're at! take your time and do your homework before you start parting with the hard earned bucks and you'll be happier in the long run!
