low oil sensor

I am converting a car to efi and I have a question about the low oil sensor that goes in the side of the oil pan. Is this sensor necessary and is it part of the fuel injection harness?

Well mine went bad and I think all it did was turn a light on in the dash - I don't think it's really needed to make the car run.
