Default loose steering

my steering column is really loose, i have probably 10-15 degrees of play in it before it actually hooks up. its not bad on regular roads but it seems a lot worse on the highway. i had it on the lift this weekend and all of the lower stuff looked OK. does anybody know what would be the first thing to go in the steering column? is it hard to get the column apart to check it out? i have airbags so i dont want to go ripping it apart without knowing what i'm looking for. '95 GT BTW.

sloppy...basically, when i'm going down the highway and my wheel is centered, i have to turn it 1-2 inches each way to get any "contact" with the steering. its disconnected somehow until i hit that point. I cant figure out what it is, i'm just wondering if anybody has taken the column apart and can think of a part in there that might go, like a bushing or something.

sounds like it's time for new tie-rods and/or a whole new rack.

you took the outer AND inner tie rod ends out to have a look? If it's not those, there is a u-joint type connection on the steering column that if worn out could cause some steering slop. When was the last time the car was aligned? If it's been a while and it only recently started doing it, take it in to have it aligned. Could be loose components.

yup, i took the whole front end apart, i had to to get to the pan. i just got the car about a week and a half ago, and it was doing it when i bought it. the guy i got it from said it was a cheap easy fix but he was a complete idiot. I dont think an alignment would do it, its way too loose for that. i'll check out that u-joint type connection you were talking about though.

no, it should be pretty tight, you should get a quick response when you turn it, there shouldnt be any slop. you probably have the same problem that i have.
