OR YOU FORGOT TO TAKE CAPS LOCK OFF.
seriously tho, if the alt took a proverbial "sh*t", you wouldnt have made it home depending on how far the ride is...

Just use a volt-meter and touch the two prongs of the battery, should read around 14 when running, 12.8ish when off, if not, you probably need an alternator.

On my stang the light came on and it ran fine still. If you wonder if your alt is bad, check the voltage comming out of it or bring it to auto zone, they will check it for free. If you have good volts on the dash, I think it is only the wire.

As others have said, the first thing to do is to check the voltage across your battery terminals with the engine running at least 800 RPM's (maybe a little higher if you have underdrive pulleys). You should see around 14 to 15 volts DC. If you see less than 13 volts, the alternator is not charging at all. As to how long it can run without the alternator, that depends on your battery and what all you're running. It's possible to run for days if you don't run your lights, wipers, or vent fan if you don't have to start the engine too many times. Or, if the battery is weak, it may only run for a few hours. My alternator went out on the way to a short mountain vacation last week, and I drove for several hours and cranked the car up 4 or 5 times before I changed the alternator in the hotel parking lot. I cut the vent fan off and was judicious with using the wipers (it was raining a little bit off and on), and only ran my parking lights. If you're getting proper voltage, then it's only an inidcator problem. You can check a wiring diagram on the autozone site to see which wires are which from the alternator.
