Default What should I look for?

As mentioned in my other recent post, I just had 3.55s installed, and now they are howling at certain speeds. Tomorrow, the shop that did the install is going to remove the diff cover, and check the wear pattern. My question is: What else should be looked at while in there? Is there something else that could be causing the howling that the wear pattern won't indicate? Thanks.

Some gears are known to make more noise than others. Richmonds I've heard are the worst. My dad has 4.11's on a 67' RS/SS and they are a bit noisy. It seems when I ordered my Ford Racing gears they mentioned the gears are a new material or cut different. Would not hurt to get Ford Racing's tech dept on the horn to comment on it, in case you get in a pissin contest with the shop. I've heard pinion bearings can make noise if the crush is too tight or pinion nut is loose. At least question them on it. Is the noise on accel, coast, or both?

They are going to throw a dial on it to check backlash too right? Should be like .008" to .014", I'd ask Ford Racing for what they recommend. I'd also question how or if they checked pinion depth.

Thanks for the replies. It is mostly on acceleration, in fourth, between 2000 and 2500 rpms. So they should put a dial on the gears when I take them in tomorrow?

Do you want them to so you can watch them do it. It's easier for me to read a dial than interpret ring gear pattern. Also, I think if there's metal in the oil, silver is ring gear chips and bronze is chewed bearings? I'd go in with a lot of questions before they pull it open in case they jerk you around. Like what was lash set at, what's the range? Ask before they pull the cover and measure it, not after!

Good suggestions. Thanks again, Meiguoren.

One more question, if I may. How will I know if the pinion nut was torqued correctly.

I think it should take about 15-20 inch pounds to rotate the pinion nut with seated pinion bearings. Not tightened to 15in/lbs but tightened so that it takes 15-25 in/lbs to rotate the pinion freely. They should of used the brand new pinion nut with thread lock that came with the gears, not yer old crappy one. Otherwise, there should be no end play or side play in the pinionyoke, you can check it yerself movin the shaft.

Thanks again for the info. No, I'm further south than Redondo--near Mission Viejo. But, last time I was in Redondo, I had a good time.
