Can someone describe gear whine?

Can someone describe gear whine?
As some know, I've been trying to troubleshoot a possible gear issue, when an important question occurred to me: What does gear whine sound like? I've always thought that it sounded like a turbine starting--a sound that increases in pitch with the speed of the gears. How would you describe the sound?

when you hear it you know its gear whine. if your talkin about a new gear set in the rear end its just kind of a droning or honing sound, it does alter with speed.

Thanks for trying folks--I know it's sort of a silly question. Mine sort of sounds like the wind whistling over some small orifice, but definitely coming from the rear end. And it does increase with gear speed. Does "gear whine" usually happen all the time, or just at certain speeds?

have some one sit in the trunk or, put the recorder aas close as you can to the diff with out being under the car... or....
put the rear end on jack stands and go through the gears and record the whine while being next to the diff. something like that

Put the car in reverse, and slowly accelerate until you are going about 20 mph, then let off the gas but keep rolling backward.... now, kill the car quickly while it is still rolling, so you can hear nothing but the drive train sounds.... you'll know what you're listening to by then.
