Default Axle shaft bearing surfaces?

Is there a surface on the axle shafts against which metal is rubbing directly on metal. If not, does it matter if the bearing surfaces are pitted/worn a bit?

Thanks folks. I'll work on getting a set tomorrow--if I can find some. I'm having trouble wrapping my head around how the shafts are set up. I had pictured them being suspended on some type of sealed bearing cartridge (like skateboard bearings) that prevented the actual shaft from being a bearing surface itself. At any rate, I wish my manual had more info on axle shafts.

You can make it like that with c-clip eliminators...

Really? I'd be happy with just functional-stock. I wanna get this problem fixed and get on with my life.

Here's what the bearings and seals look like. The axle rides directly on the rollers.

c- clip eliminators, they actually press on to the axle, inner race stays stationary on the axles, the flange bolts to the axle tube and backing plate

Yeah, that's what I'd do too.

Hey thanks for the pics, Pro50. I understand now. So pitted axle bearing surfaces are a BIG DEAL! So suppose I used these c-clip eliminators. Would I be able to use my old, haggardly axles? Would it matter if the bearing surfaces were a bit ragged? I guess the inner race may not seat properly, huh? Thanks again for the help, everyone.

As long as they are not totalled all the way around the c-clip elims should be ok. The stock style bearings, not a f'in' chance!! Can you post up any pics of them and is this your rearend noise. I thought all this was being replaced w/ the gear install.
