All stock..should I get 4.10 or 4.30?
First of all...this forum is great, maybe I can contribute one of these days instead of asking dumb questions. ANyway, my 89 5.0 is all stock with over 100K on it so I hear gears is the best way to go to increase power on my ride. I have done alot of post reading about gears and am convinced I need 4.10's, maybe 4.30's. So here is my question. Right now 1st gear is just for starting out and it gets used up quick. I know gears will make it even shorter. So heres the thing...can I start out in 2nd with 4.10's or will I need 4.30's? Oh ya, one more thing....I have read alot of talk about having to tweak the computer to make up for the lower gears. I this just something on the new stangs or does my 89 need that too.....I get to use all the equipment at the craft shop on the army base here so maybe they might help me out with the computer crap.

+2 for 3.55's on a stock daily driver
3.73's if you have a little work in mind (minor bolt ons) and still drive it every day
4.10s if you only drive it AT the dragstrip.... they are horrible on a daily streeted 5 speed. My best friend wants to rip his out because he has a hard time driving it around town... too much gear. were gonna swap him to 3.73s, me.. im going 3.55 cuz im getting blown. I dont wanna have to tach out to run the 1/4. i'd like to still keep SOME of my highway top end

I have 4:10`s in an automatic. Wish I went with 3:73`s. That way I could stay out of overdrive in the 1/4 mile. Approx. 3500rpm`s at 60mph in Drive and 2500rpm`s in Overdrive at 60mph. Lots of fun in town tho!! [sm=gears.gif]
