Default Fly cutting piston question

Alright, about how big of a cam can you put in an engine with the stock cut pistons? right now i have the F cam in my car with .512 lift with 226 degree's of duration on both valves. I know there are better cams than the F303. But i was going to do a head swap with some Vic Jrs and wanted a cam a little bigger to take advantage of the increased flow potential. Anyone know max lift, max duration without having to increase the cuts on your pistons?

Yea i have 2.02 intake 1.60 exhaust. See im wanting something a little better. The F303 has fixed lift and duration for both intake and exhaust. I want a cam with some more overlap and varied exhaust and intake duration and lift.

yea ford cams suck sry for everyone that has one. so u run a 2.02 intake and 1.60 exhaust? i did not think you could do that with a stock bottom end.

The issue with PtV clearance problems is not valve lift....it's a cam overlap created problem....Check this article on the subject...FWIW, FRPP starts suggesting to "check PtV" with cams with overlaps at/over 60°, lower if you have the '86 flat tops.

B303 - 224/224 112LSA 108ICL .480/.480 0 overlap @.050
X303 - 224/224 112LSA 108ICL .542/.542 0 overlap @.050
F303 - 226/226 114LSA 110ICL .512/.512 -2 overlap @.050
Z303 - 228/228 112LSA 108ICL .552/.552 4 overlap @.050

Those are the specs on the motorsports cams if anybody wanted to know....soo...yea.

Alright. that site was pretty interesting joel. I'd like to get that tool and re-notch my pistons. Im tired of the F cam, i dont really like the power band it has. I want something more meaty, with more overlap, etc. I wonder if that relief cutter has like a measurment or something on it to tell you how much your cutting out. That'd be nice. I guess you could cut the first piston to where you need it, then mark it on the stem and cut all the others to that line. I'd only need to take out about .30 to go Trick Flow stage II. Thats the cam im wanting, heard good things all around about it.

Well....in order to determine how much, and where you have to cut from the pistons, you need to clay it or use the check springs method first...sometimes you don't have to notch, it's a matter of making sure you get the .080" intake/.100" exhaust clearance (more if you have aluminum heads).......Q here though....how did you get those overlap numbers?....overlap on the OEM cams is 39°, performance cams are usually over 52°.

you might could run the trick flow twisted wedge head with out notching the pistons, it has the 2.02 valves.
