Default Black smoke and rough running

I have an 88gt and it is running rough and I am getting some black smoke out of the exhaust. Any one have some recommendations? Some people tell me it's my timing and some say my egr valve, do either of these sound like the problem?

could be alot of things. You could be running just extremely rich and its fouling your plugs making the car run rough. Check ur plugs see if the'yre fouled out.

^^Thats another thing, or they're just caked full of carbon. Burn them with a propane torch to clean them. I did that with mine and my car runs much better now.

I am having the same problem, Mine has even died on me a few times while driving. I just replaced the spark plugs and they smelled strongly like gas. I am going to try the O2's next. let me know if anyone has any other ideas on this. If I cant figure it out in the next week or so I am going to take it to a local ford shop and I will post the results.

Good Luck on the fix!!!

Could be a vacuum leak. The map sensor could be dumping fuel to compensate for the less vacuum. Is it running rich at start up? If it is it isn't the 02's because they don't kick in till they heat up to a 600* and the ect detects 160*.
