In theory, I understand 95stang in what he is saying about the 331 lasting longer than the 347 and even the 351 for that mater. The rings cover less distance per stroke, so there fore less wear, in theory. Say for instance, you take a saw and cut a tree branch down, will it cut faster with a longer stroke or shorter?

sure, as long as you stay under 500 horse on a stock block.

how long will the 331 last vs. 347 last with good care and maintanence
ORIGINAL: 95stang_low12s_motor

Tinman: In response, i was referring to the subject: 331 vs 347 (both a 302 block). Not sure how a 351 block was brought into the subject. However my point was that a 331 would last longer than a 347. Yes bigger cubes = more horses (about 1 to 1 ratio) however a 331 is a more durable and longer lasting block. Rings on a 347 will wear faster than on a 331. If you are building a race car, by all means go with the 347, however if this is daily driver a 331 is my choice...thoughts?

I dont think a stock 302 can handle 500 hp for any length of time. I do think a mexican block is what is talked up to be, and can handle 500hp. It is heavier and the added nickle does indicate stonger material.

Just FYI - the 308, 331, and 347 kits all use the 302 block. The cylinders are just bored out a little larger to fit the stroker kit. Therefore they all weight nearly the exact same. (granted they use the same pistons, crank, and rods)

How hard are you going to drive it? It all depends, but I know of people with both and they are still running them. Its not like if you make a stroker motor it is going to be a time bomb. Even the difference between choice of a 331 or 347 is mainly personal descression. You would probably be happy either way.

Tinman: I also live about 40 miles from the boarder and Mexican Blocks are easy to come by. Tucson here, where are you located? At any rate I have learned a lot just by reading this thread. I wanted to ask if anyone here has any experience with the "sportsman block" from ford rated for 500+ hp. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...fms-m-6010-b50 i recently purchased this block instead of going with a Mexican block. I am putting in a 331 stroker kit from Eagle. I believe these pistons call for a .030 over bore.

"Increasing the bore (machining the cylinder walls .030 or .060 over) has 2 benefits. It allows for a larger combustion chamber in the cylinder head, which allows for larger valves. Second, it opens p the space between teh outer edge of the intake valves and the cylinder bores. This reduces the shrouding of the valves and that almost always inproves airflow." (MM&FF Feb. 2005 pg. 159)

"In contrast, lengthening the stoke increases the swept area that the pistions travel in the cylinder bores. THis yields much larger increase in engine size when compared to boring a block. Boring a 302 block .030-inch over stock add 4 cubic inches, making it a 306, while stroking the engine by .400 inch adds 39 cubic inches." (MM&FF Feb. 2005 pg. 159)

Here is the equation to figure displacement of your engine: bore x bore x stroke x .7854 x number of cylinders = displacement (302)

If anyone keeps their old MM&FF magazines check out Feb. 2003 page 250 for a peek at my mustang.

For Stroker Kits Feb. 2005 is a good read.

Numbers:

stock 302 - strokes are 3.00 inches
stock 351 - strokes are 3.50 inches

Strokers:
(302 block)
331 - 3.25
347 - 3.40

(351 block)
360 - 3.50
377 - 3.68
392 - 3.90
408 - 4.00

Ovbiously in order to travel from Top Dead Center (TDC) to Bottom Dead Center (BDC) the longer the stroke, the faster the piston will have to travel. Therefore a 3.40 inch stroke vs. a 3.25 stroke will require the piston, rod, crank to work harder to travel the added distance in the same amount of time. Hence, a 331 is last longer than a 347, due to the lack of travel. This lack of travel will also result in less horsepower of approximatey 16 horses granted everything else the same. A trade off many are willing to give, but not me, due to my mustang being a daily driver.

+1
But if gas prices keep going up I may invest in a moped with a fartcan on it...
