Should I go with MSD Blaster 2 or Blaster 3 Coil for Carb Swap
Hey all...
I know the only difference between the MSD Blaster 2 coil and Blaster 3 coil are the higher 'tower' on the 3, but which one should I go with for doing my EFI to carb swap when i convert my 4cyl. It looks to me that you have to use special coil -> dizzy wire on the Blaster 2, but the Blaster 3 will accept conventional wire.

Oil filled coils suck. They leak, which is why MSD suggests you mount the coil with the plastic tower up and MSD sells an epoxy filled version for high vibration. Unless yer using a MSD 6 or other CD igntion, the epoxy filled "E" type coils work the best with inductive type ignitions. More energy than the oil filled due to the efficient compact design.

Epoxy filled coils have been used OEM since the mid 70's. What are you shooting for RPM wise, are you running huge compression? Ford TFI "E" core coil should be fine on a mild build with inductive type electronic ignition.

So would the Blaster SS coil be okay for use with a carbeurated engine with MSD distributor and MSD 6AL ignition box? I like the idea better than the Oil filled, i just thought that was my only option.

I've been using epoxy type coils for years on brand 'D' racers and now on my carbed 'Stang as well.
You'll not have the problems that can have with the oil filled coils......

So can I use the Blaster SS on my 6AL ignition box with a MSD 8479 (magnetic pickup, vacuum advance) distributor for carbed engines... just plain yes it will work or no it wont work will be fine. Its so hard getting a straight forward answer on this forum.
